December General Meeting

Listening to Music on Your Mac by Gary Estes

You don't have to have an iPod to take advantage of the many computer based music opportunities. You can store and play music directly from your computer. You can use Internet radio. You can listen to that interesting piece you heard on the regular radio at a later time or date. You can find music and information that never reaches the regular media program directors, thereby accessing some truly original content. You can even create your own custom Internet based radio stream.

Gary Estes will offer us insights and how-tos for these computer based audio possibilities and more at the December PT SLUG general meeting. If you ask nicely he might also serve up some tidbits on using your iPod or iPhone, too.

Nov General Meeting - The Joys of Photography

Photography can be more than a technical hobby. It can change the way we see the world and offer opportunities for service. And you don't need the latest and greatest equipment to participate.

6 1/2 years ago Deja Webster suffered through the loss of her significant other.  She found that the world turned into a landscape of grays. Through photography she she began to see the world as a bright and colorful place again. She now works as a professional photographer and does excellent volunteer work at the Jefferson County Animal Shelter, photographing animals for placement ads in both the Leader and for PetFinder.com.  Because of her photographs, the shelter web site enjoys a very high visitor count and places animals into homes far outside of Jefferson County.

Deja is president of the Port Townsend Photography Club, a great resource for people wishing to share their love of photography and pick up some great tips. She will share information about the club during the meeting.

Our next PTSLUG Macintosh Programs Workshop (Special Interest Group or SIG) will be on Friday, September 19th, 7 PM, in the WSU computer lab. There is no charge for workshop

For the September class Francesca Drum will discuss the main features of Pages, Apple’s word processing program that is part of iWork ’06 and ’08. WSU has acquired iWork ‘ 08 including the new Pages ’08 and has installed the software on all computers in the lab. There will hands-on practice during the class, so those who bring their own laptops will need to have some version of Pages installed. iWork ’08 is available as a free 30-day trial from Apple. (If you don’t have it on your laptop, download and install the trial version before the class at www.apple.com/iwork/trial/) Questions are welcome.

This workshop (SIG) is available to the general public as well as PTSLUG members. However, we do give priority to PTSLUG members. Join us from 7 to 9 PM on Friday, September 19th at the WSU NOP computer lab in the Shold Business Park off Rhody Drive in Port Hadlock. Since there are only 9 iMacs in the lab, those with laptops are encouraged to bring them. There are four spaces available for those with laptops. If you plan to attend you must let Bob Snow know via email, so he can reserve a place for you. Bob can be contacted at sherman101@mac.com.

Prior to the workshop Francesca Drum’s notes will be posted on the PTSLUG website for participants to download, print and bring to the class. Watch for it on the home page of the web site at www.ptslug.org.

Important Note: In some of the earlier workshops so many people attended that the computer room was very crowded. We have had to limit the number of attendees to 9 people for the desktop computer space and 4 people bringing their own laptops. Please tell us which type of computer you will be using. If you are a couple and can both use the same computer please let us know as well. This will free up one space for another attendee. When we reach the limit on space available (9 and 4) we will put any additional attendees on a standby list. If after receiving a confirmation, if you are unable attend please let Bob know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else. Those who need to cancel and do not let us know 24 hours in advance will lose their priority in future workshops.
