August General Meeting - Web 2.0

The Internet is evolving from an unconnected network of websites that present static information into an interconnected computing platform. The new web, Web 2.0 is built on the idea of web citizens participating in creating rather than passively consuming information. From Amazon.com to Wikipedia.org, websites garner the collective knowledge of their visitor/participants to provide an experience that no single source can offer. At the same time sites like MySpace.com, YouTube.com, Blogger.com and Del.icio.us easier than ever for average people to add their voice and vision to the web. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Join us for a presentation by Kris Raikes, tech guru for the W.S.U North Olympic Peninsula Learning Center, who will offer some insight into Web 2.0, as well as practical tips on how we can make use of its growing features.

Kris has some helpful web links up at http://delicious.com/cougarroom/web2.0

June General Meeting

Understanding Printers

Learn why that cheap printer may cost you more in the long run.

Jeff Petersen of Olympic Printer Rescources, Inc. in Kingston, WA will be presenting this Thursday evening at 7:00. He will discuss printers and printer cartridges, covering subjects like, reliability, operating cost, compatibility, networking printers and the green (and cost) advantages of using remanufactured printer cartridges as opposed to buying new ones. Find out which brands come in for the most repairs, which models can be repaired - and more - from a company on this side of the Sound.

Olympic Printer Resources, Inc. was awarded a Kitsap County 2008 Earth Day Award for Environmental Leadership. They offer a 100% guarantee that their remanufactured products have the same print quality and capacity as factory furnished cartridges and can save you 25-50% of the cost of new cartridges.

Tri Area Community Center, Chimacum
7:00 p.m.
Free and open to the public.

PTSLUG Mac Programs Workshop (SIG), Friday, June 20th, 7 PM, WSU Computer Lab

Our next PTSLUG Macintosh Programs Special Interest Group (SIG) will be on Friday, June 20th, 7 PM, in the WSU computer lab. There is no charge for workshop

In the May we began looking at the main features of several Mac programs and utilities that come free, already loaded on your Mac, if it is running OS X. Some of these programs will include: Address Book, Dictionary, Font Book, iCal, Image Capture, Preview, QuickTime Player, Dashboard (Widgets), Spotlight, Stickies, System Preferences and some utilities such as the Activity Monitor and Disk Utility. These programs reside in your Home folder's Applications folder as well as Applications folder's --> Utilities folder.

For the June 20th class, Francesca Drum will review the features of Calculator and Stickies first, including some hands on work. Next there will be a workshop project to review Address Book. With whatever time is left, Francesca will begin an iCal presentation. This is a chance to learn about some of the hidden features of these programs as well as find out how they work with each other. Questions are welcome.

This workshop (SIG) is available to the general public as well as PTSLUG members. Join us from 7 to 9 PM on Friday, May 20th at the WSU NOP computer lab in the Shold Business Park off Rhody Drive in Port Hadlock. Since there are only 9 iMacs in the lab, those with laptops are encouraged to bring them. Also as space is limited, if you plan to attend you must let Francesca Drum know via email, so she can save a place for you: Francesca is at fdrum@olympus.net.

Important Note: In some of the earlier workshops so many people attended that the computer room was very crowded. We have had to limit the number of attendees to 9 people for the desktop computer space and 4 people bringing their own laptops. Please tell us which type of computer you will be using. If you are a couple and can both use the same computer please let us know as well. This will free up one space for another attendee. When we reach the limit on space available (9 and 4) we will put any additional attendees on a standby list. If after receiving a confirmation, if you are unable attend please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.

PLCC Offering Basic Mac Class in June to PTLSUG

The Port Ludlow Computer Club's (PLCC) Mac special interest group is offering its members a basic Macintosh class. It will consist of 4 two-hour sessions spread over two weeks in June. The PLCC Mac group has offered PTSLUG members any spaces that are not filled by PLCC members. This class would be a good introduction for those who are new to the Mac. The cost for the eight hours of instruction and hands-on work is $35 for non-PLCC members. Participants in the course well need to get a copy of Robin Williams' book "The Little Mac Book". Please note there are two editions of the book: (1) the Tiger Edition for those who have the  OS X version 10.4 of the Mac operating system, and (2) the Leopard Edition for those with the newer OS X 10.5 Mac operating system. You can order this book from Amazon ($13.59 new) or it may be available at Barnes and Noble in Silverdale and other locations. Either of these books is highly recommended for any beginning Mac user, even if you do not take the class.

Information on the course and a PLCC contact for signing up is below. If you are interested you should contact PLCC directly and let the contact person know if you would need a dektop Mac space or wish to bring your own Mac laptop. Please note, there will be very few spaces available, so if you are interested I suggest you contact PLCC as soon as you can.

April PTSLUG Mac Programs Workshop (SIG) , WSU Computer Lab, 7-9 PM

The April PTSLUG Mac Programs Workshop (SIG) will continue last month's word processing theme.  We will compare the use of TextEdit, AppleWorks, and Pages while participants design a letterhead. We will explore the range of available templates and use the internet to translate a foreign language document.

The workshop (SIG) is available to PTSLUG members and the general public. The workshop is free, but advance reservations are required.

Since there are only 9 iMacs in the lab, those with laptops are encouraged to bring their own. Space is limited so if you wish to attend you will need to let Francesca Drum know via email at fdrum@olympus.net.

Please tell us
1) Whether you will need a desktop computer or will bring your own laptop.
2) If you are reserving for more than one person, please provide the names of the other(s) participants too.
2) If you are a couple,  are you willing to share the same computer?

Important Note: Because of the popularity of these workshops we must limit the number of attendees to the first 9 members to RSVP for desktop computer space and the first 4 members bringing their own laptops.  That will allow another person to attend. Priority will be given to PTSLUG members but all Mac users are welcome, space permitting. When we reach the limit on space available (9 and 4) we will put any additional people on a standby list. If you have signed up and cannot make it you must let us know at least 24 hours in advance so we can assign your space to another person.
